Beer tradition in the Czech Republic and Austria

Beer has a long and rich tradition in the regions of Mühlviertel and South Bohemia, which have long been seen as a Mecca for beer lovers. Each year, the city of České Budějovice (or Budweis) hosts the prestigious “International Beer Festival” in honour of the popular barley juice known as “liquid gold”, as some call it, where the best beers in Europe are selected. Since the early Middle Ages, Austria and the Czech Republic have benefited from excellent conditions for the cultivation of the raw materials malting barley and hops. For example, the Czech word pivo (beer) was used as early as the 8th century to refer to a “fermented hop and grain drink” that generally contained honey, spices and fruit. As a result, both countries still enjoy an above-average density and diversity of breweries. One of the oldest of these is the Krušovice brewery in Bohemia (we hope you were able to taste a sample of this beer in our 2020 Christmas mailing).
