Austria and the Czech Republic – a strong connection
The two cities Budweis and Linz have been twinned since 1987, four years before our Czech subsidiary was founded, due to their close historical ties. The route from Budweis to Linz has been an important trade route for salt since the Bronze Age. The valuable mineral, which people initially carried on their backs, was later transported from Linz to Budweis on horse-drawn carts. In 1832, the cities of Budweis and Linz were connected by a horse-drawn railway, the first of its kind in Europe. In addition, an important trade route ran from Linz to Budweis and beyond.
Czechs and Austrians are not only linked by historic transport routes, but also by their industriousness. According to a 2019 Eurostat survey, within the European Union, Austrians work an average of 42.4 hours per and Czechs work an average of 41.5 hours, placing both among the top 10 countries with the longest working week. Not surprisingly, given such a hard-working population, the best-known work-related proverbs are very similar in both countries.

Competition
In the Czech Republic, the saying goes: “Bez práce nejsou koláče” (no work, no cake), i.e.: if you don’t work, then you don’t deserve to eat. The German equivalent is:
- Ohne Fleiß kein Preis (no work, no prize)
- Erst das Vergnügen, dann die Arbeit (pleasure first, then work)
- Arbeit ist das, was man tut, damit man es eines Tages nicht mehr zu tun braucht. (Work is what you do so that some day you won’t have to do it any more.)
