Famous people and rivers

The people of the Czech Republic and Austria have a lot in common, above and beyond their 400 years of shared history in the Habsburg Monarchy, similar size and geographical proximity. Each country has its own highly popular national winter sport, and both countries are very successful in their respective fields. In the Czech Republic, ice hockey ranks much higher in the sporting stakes than football. The Czechs enjoy a correspondingly high level of success in this sport: they have already won the world championship several times and have scored one Olympic victory. The most successful skiers of all time ( in terms of the number of victories in the Alpine Ski World Cup) hail from Austria: Marcel Hirscher and Annemarie Moser-Pröll.

In addition to their national sport, both countries can also boast numerous famous public figures. Some of the more notable Czechs include tennis star Martina Navratilova, writer Franz Kafka and classical composers Bedrich Smetana and Antonín Dvorák. Austria’s most famous personalities include Formula 1 racing champion Niki Lauda, writer Stefan Zweig and composer Anton Bruckner.

Our Austrian and Czech sites at HAUSER (Linz, St. Martin, Budweis, Kaplice) have one thing in common: they are all situated on a river. Both countries have their own classical music virtuosos, whose most famous works both feature a river. For example, the Austrian composer Johann Strauss captured the spirit of the Danube in a beautiful melody.
